Expert Witness training completed
Experienced medicolegal expert
Extensive courtroom experience

Dr Ramos-Galvez has been writing medicolegal reports since 2017 and provides reports for both personal injury and medical negligence cases.

After extensive training in spinal surgery at the Oxford Deanery, Dr Ramos-Galvez undertook further specialisation in pain medicine.  His understanding of the interactions between these complex areas of medicine means he is often called upon to provide an opinion within his clinical practice or as an expert witness where spinal surgery has led to complications.

Being part of a large trauma department, he has a fundamental and in-depth understanding of how neuropathic pain and CRPS may be triggered by surgery or trauma. This encompasses the multiple surgical techniques used today in this field.

Dr Ivan Ramos-Galvez is a Consultant in Pain Medicine at the Royal Berkshire Hospital with a private practice at Spire Dunedin and Circle Hospitals in Reading.

He has a special interest in neuropathic pain and CRPS and has developed a treatment portfolio ranging from simple oral anti-neuropathic agents to neuromodulation.

He has developed a multi-disciplinary unit for the assessment and treatment of patients suffering with fibromyalgia within his practice and incorporates a large spectrum of pharmacological options, as well as rehabilitative programs.

The medicolegal challenges of assessing prognosis and degree of disability

by Dr Ivan Ramos-Galvez, Consultant in Pain Medicine

As settlement is often reached before recovery is complete, predicting the patient’s prognosis and likely degree of disability, if any, become crucial: the claimant should be fairly compensated for any injuries suffered, but the defendant should not be required to pay out an unnecessarily high amount.

The role of contributory negligence in defending a claim

If it can be demonstrated that a claimant contributed in some way to their own injuries, this may offer a partial defence. This is important, because if such ‘contributory negligence’ can be proved, the defendant’s liability for compensation will be reduced accordingly.

The importance of medical records when defending a claim

A complete medical record may include a variety of documentation pertaining to the patient’s condition and care. Clinical findings, diagnostic test results, preoperative care, surgical notes, postoperative care, and the patient’s progress and medications may all form part of the medical history.
